Guidelines in Using Turnitin

Turnitin is a widely used online plagiarism detection and academic integrity tool used in educational institutions around the world. Turnitin is a similarity checks tool designed to help educators identify potential of plagiarism in student papers and promote originality in academic writing. Turnitin doesn’t identify plagiarism, but it shows the similarity matches in the vast databases and online sources.

1. Create an Account (For first time user):

Open a web browser and go to the link: https://www.turnitin.com/newuser_type.asp?lang=en_us  and click 'Student' to create your student profile. Follow the on-screen prompts to sign up using your UNITAR’s student email address (e.g mc250512345@student.unitar.my). Registering with personal email is NOT allowed and your instructor will block the account permanently.

2. Submit Your Paper:

2.1 Click on the assignment or assessment within Turnitin where you need to submit your paper.

2.2 Follow the on-screen instructions to upload your document. You can usually submit common document file types like Word and PDF.

2.3 Review the submission details and ensure you've attached the correct file.

3. Wait for the Originality Report:

After you've submitted your paper, Turnitin will generate an Originality Report. This report highlights any matching text found in your paper against a vast database of academic content and online sources.

It may take some time for the report to generate. Submission 1 to 3 normally will take around 10-15 minutes. 4th Submission and above will take 24 hours for Turnitin to generate the similarity report.

4. Review the Originality Report:

Once the Originality Report is available, you can access it from the assignment page.

Carefully review the report to see if there are any highlighted sections that might be considered plagiarism.

Pay attention to properly cited and quoted material. Some similarities may be due to common phrases or proper citations.

5. Make Corrections (if necessary):

If the Originality Report indicates potential issues with plagiarism, review your paper and make necessary corrections.

Ensure you properly cite and reference all sources according to citation guidelines.

6. Resubmit (if allowed):

If your instructor allows multiple submissions, you can revise your paper, make corrections, and resubmit it to Turnitin.

Repeat steps 2 to 6 as needed until your instructor satisfied with the results.
